A northwest Columbus preschool, set to open August 28,
will continue its alternative education strategy.
Under its new name, Jane's Montessori Academy, 1375
Francisco Road, will continue the legacy of school founder
Jane Wolfe Chabria, who is credited with establishing the
Montessori Method school in Central Ohio in 1965, said
principal Tammy Chabria.
The Montessori Method is a comprehensive educational
approach from birth to adulthood based on the observations of
children's needs in a variety of cultures all around the world.
The method offers students positive education choices in a
controlled environment, according to the North American
Montessori Teachers' Association Web site,
montessori-namta.org.
"It's freedom of choice with limits," Chabria said.
"It's not a free-for-all."
Although there are no lectures, Chabria said teachers
demonstrate various learning tools before supervising from a
peripheral location.
The classrooms are stocked with positive learning tools to
inspire individual learning choices, Chabria said.
It's individual education at an individual rate, she said.
Discipline is individualized also, Chabria said.
Teachers supervise students as they use conflict management
tools to resolve their differences.
"We teach them the tools to be able to resolve issues using
their words and being able to talk through their feelings,"
Chabria said.
These supportive disciplinary strategies combined with
positive classroom environments create a climate nearly free
from disruption, Chabria said.
"Montessori classrooms are very quiet," Chabria said.
"It's because they're so involved in the work they're doing."
