Why would parents oppose dress code?

I applaud the Reynoldsburg Board of Education’s decision to
institute a school uniform ("Reynoldsburg board approves
dress code," Dispatch article, Dec. 20).

However, it troubles me as an educator when I read about
parents continually wanting to lower standards for their
children rather than trying to raise the bar. One study, by
Youngstown State University assistant professor Virginia
Draa, found that requiring students to wear uniforms results in
increased attendance and graduation rates and fewer student
suspensions.

The Dispatch has reported on the gang problems occurring in
Reynoldsburg. Would parents want their children to be victims
of gang violence because they accidentally wore the wrong
colors? A uniform policy helps alleviate this problem as well.

I run a preschool with a uniform policy and also have
experience in schools without uniforms. We observe where
students, even at a young age, benefit from a uniform. Our
population is very diverse, but students are more accepting of
each other because they are wearing the same clothes.

I would think that parents would want their children to go as
far as they can, and a school uniform is a tool to help students
achieve more.

"Our aim is not only to make the child understand, and still less to
force him to memorize, but so to touch his imagination as to enthuse
him to his innermost core."
