On September 21, 2006, the International Day of
Peace, the students and faculty of Jane’s Montessori
Academy planted our Peace Pole. The words “May
Peace Prevail On Earth” are inscribed on it in four
separate languages: English, Spanish, Yiddish and
Hindi. All four languages were read, and as an added
bonus, the words were also translated into Korean for
the entire group! The students then taught their family
and friends a song about friends, both old and new.
Each student then helped plant the peace pole by
shoveling dirt into the hole. Finally, the faculty,
students, family and friends all shared a meal which
showcased the various cultures which were present.
Our Peace Pole joins the more than 200,000 Peace
Poles around the world, including one at the North Pole
and one at the Pyramids in Egypt. The Peace Pole
Project was started in 1955. They are a hallmark of
Montessori education. Simply put, Peace Poles serve as
a marker that a particular location is dedicated to
promoting peace.
The International Day of Peace takes place every year
on September 21st. It is a day when individuals and
organizations around the world make efforts of all kinds
to secure a more peaceful world.

"Our aim is not only to make the child understand, and still less to
force him to memorize, but so to touch his imagination as to enthuse
him to his innermost core."
